GANDHINAGAR: Over two years after its nullification by the Parliament to remove J&K’s special status, “Article 370” is getting a sporty makeover in Gujarat as the theme of a BJP-organised kabaddi and cricket tournament each in Union home minister Amit Shah’s Gandhinagar constituency. A proposal to name the mid-December event “Gandhinagar Lok Sabha Premier League 370” has been cleared by the party and an official announcement will be made soon, said Gujarat BJP general secretary Pradipsinh Vaghela on Tuesday.
Vaghela said the name of the tournament was meant to be an acknowledgement of Shah’s role in tabling the bill that led to the nullification of Article 370. He said the people of Gujarat could easily relate to the name of the event as their MP was instrumental in removing the provision that granted J&K special status for decades.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked all MPs to organise sports tournaments in their constituencies. Thus, to provide a platform to talented youths, Shah, too, asked us to host such tournaments in his constituency. We will start with kabaddi and cricket and then take up other sports,” Vaghela said.
A registration drive for the tournaments and teams will begin soon. Party sources said the competition would probably begin on December 15.
