SRINAGAR: A policeman was shot dead by terrorists in the Batamaloo area of the city on Sunday, officials said.
He was identified as Constable Tausif Ahmad, they said.
“At about 8 pm, terrorists fired upon JKP Constable Tausif Ahmad near his residence at SD Colony, Batamaloo,” the officials told PTI.
Ahmad was shifted to a hospital but could not be saved. “He was shifted to hospital in a critical condition and doctors declared him dead on arrival,” newsagency IANS said quoting a source.
They said the cop was critically injured and was taken to the SMHS hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The area has been cordoned off, and a hunt has been launched to nab the attackers, the officials added.
In another incident, terrorists hurled a grenade towards security personnel in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said. No loss of life or injury has been reported so far in the incident.
“At 6:25 pm, terrorists hurled a grenade upon 18 Bn CRPF party at Nehama chowk in district Kulgam which exploded on the roadside,” a police official said.
The Kashmir valley has seen several attacks including on security forces and also on minorities in recent days. The security forces have also intensified their operations against terrorists.
Meanwhile, the National Conference (NC) condemned the attack.
“Unequivocally condemn the cowardly & dastardly attack on 29-year-old policeman in Batmaloo, Srinagar in which he lost his life. No words of condemnation would be enough! May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time of grief,” the party tweeted.
Meanwhile, according to agency reports, an alleged militant of The Resistance Front (TRF) was arrested from a hospital in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said.
Police came to know that an active TRF militant, identified as Sohail Ahmad Lone of Hermain area of Shopian, was in the district hospital undergoing treatment, a police official told PTI.
“He was taken into custody and has been admitted at SMHS hospital Srinagar in a critical condition,” the official said. He has a bullet wound on the neck and police are verifying the cause of the injury, the official said.
